A note from Alex Holzbach

I would just like to thank everyone for donating to Friends of Strings. Your continued support has allowed me to be a part of the amazing strings program at this school and perform for a scholarship that will help me pay for college. Next fall, I will be attending Rice University and majoring in electrical engineering. I am super excited to go to college and can't wait to continue playing the violin. This scholarship has brought me one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming an electrical engineer in the field of renewable energy. Once again, I would like to thank you for being a part of the strings community at Alamo Heights.

Friends of Strings is pleased to announce that Bali Daniels is one of two Friends of String's scholarship recipients for 2020. Each student will be awarded $1,500 to attend the college or university of their choice.  The FOS scholarship fund was established to recognize and assist graduating high school strings players continue pursuit of the educational goals in an institution of higher learning.  Recipients are selected based upon academic performance, musical performance, and orchestral participation.  CONGRATULATIONS! on a job well done Bali. Because of your hard work and determination, Friends of Strings is honored to recognize and encourage you in the pursuit of your educational goals to major in Psychology at San Antonio College and of attaining your dream to become a researcher in psychology/neuroscience.

A letter from Bali Daniels

Dear Friends of Strings Donors,

Thank you for supporting the Alamo Heights Strings Program. I am especially grateful because this program has been my lifeblood for nine years. In fifth grade, I had a playing test over “Jingle Bells” and I couldn’t play past the first two measures. It was incredibly embarrassing and I went home to practice until I got it right. That was the night I realized that playing the violin was important to me. I met one of my private teachers on the first day of sixth grade and she got me into competitive auditions such as the All-Region orchestras. High school is where I met one of the most welcoming and fun communities I have ever been a part of the chamber orchestra. I write all of this to you to express my gratitude for keeping this program up and running. I have had so many opportunities from being in Strings: playing in the pit for two musicals, being in leadership positions, and growing with a community that has supported me time and time again.
This year, I am very excited to be named one of the scholarship winners. I plan on attending San Antonio College this fall with the hopes of majoring in Psychology. I dream of becoming a
researcher in the realm of psychology/neuroscience. This scholarship will greatly help me reach that goal. I will continue playing violin throughout college and hope to be a part of an adult
orchestra later in life.

Sincerely,
Bali Daniels

UIL Concert and Sight-reading Evaluation

3/8/2020

Last week, the AHHS orchestras performed in the UIL Concert and Sight-reading Evaluation. All of the AHHS participating orchestras received straight Superior ratings from all 6 judges. This is the absolute highest rating we could have achieved from the adjudicators who were primarily from the Houston, Dallas, and West Texas areas.

“What a great way to end the third nine weeks! I'm happy for the growth our students have shown and I look forward to the rest of the school year.

PS. I am working on digitizing our recordings so I can email out to parents. That is a spring break project for me!” Mr. Cavazos - AHHS Orchestra Director

Many thanks for your support of the FOS Plant Sale. Through you and your children’s enthusiastic efforts, over $24,000 in plants were sold! That’s more than in 2019 and translates close to 30,000 individual plants! Proceeds from the FOS plant sale are invested right back into the AHISD strings program, providing a valuable and enriching education in the field of music to your children!

Now comes the exciting part of the plant sale! Volunteers are needed on Saturday, 28 March 2020, to help with plant pick up day! Volunteers can sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050b4ba8a828a57-friends. The more people there are to help, the smoother the day will go. Plus, it is a fun event, older students can receive service hours, and there will be coffee, donuts, and tacos. To ensure no one has to volunteer for the whole day, shifts are 2 to 3 hours. The day begins at 6:00am, with families picking up plants between 10:30am and 1:00pm, and the work day ends at 2:30pm.

We look forward to seeing you on plant pick up day on 28 March. If you have questions and/or, please reach out to us or contact Catherine Sobieszczyk, plant sale chair, at catherine.sobieszczyk@gmail.com.
